Meet: Jillian Artistry
Jillian Gunlicks is a Sioux Falls based artist that specializes in bridal make-up and live wedding commissioned art. We sat down with her to learn about her company and experiences as an artist.
Penny Tree: Tell us about yourself and your company?
I started exploring art when I was very young, mostly simple coloring and pencil drawings. By the time I was in high school I realized I had a passion and started taking private art lessons where I learned how to paint and use other mediums. I went to college and studied as an art major continuing to develop speed and skill. In 2013 I was asked by a friend to paint live at her brothers wedding. I was excited at the thought of this and once I did it I loved it. I loved the idea that I could paint in front of people who don't normally see the painting process. It's something different and unique that the guests love to watch and it's also a painting that the bride and groom get to have forever! Since that first live wedding painting I have created hundreds of family, pet, and wedding portraits as well as dozens of live wedding paintings. I could not be happier to do what I do.
Penny Tree: Since you were doing wedding paintings how did you transition into makeup as well?
Makeup seemed like a natural transition from painting. I was curious to see how I could use my artistic background and apply it to the face. I decided to take it to the next level and learn all I could from a school in Southern California. It was intense. My artistic background helped a lot to understand light and shadow along with color theory. I stayed in California for a couple of years doing photo shoots but eventually moved back to Sioux Falls. I jumped into the wedding industry and have been doing bridal makeup for the last seven years!
Penny Tree: What is your favorite part of the day to capture?
Wow... I don't think I have a favorite. I love every part of the wedding! Every one is so different because the couples are so different.
Penny Tree: What is your advice to brides and grooms?
My advice would be to try to be in the moment as much as you can. It is a big day with a lot going on but take time to soak it in. Enjoy it!
Penny Tree: What is the most exciting place you have been to capture a live wedding portrait?
I was just in Big Sur California last May for a Live Wedding Painting. That was amazing!! It was an outdoor wedding and the scenery was incredible. I was able to paint the bride and groom standing in a riverbed surrounded by the water and trees. That one was beyond fun!
Penny Tree: How do you spend your time outside of weddings and art? What are your other interests and hobbies?
I have a six-year-old daughter who I spend most of my time with. We love to be outside in the bike trails or hang out at coffee shops when it's cold. I home school so she tags along with me most places I go. I also love live music! When I get a night away I'm looking for any place that has music and friends!
